Negative Views of U.S. Unchanged in Turkey
While overall ratings for the U.S. have improved throughout much of the world, in Turkey they remain dismal -- only 14% of Turks expressed a positive view of the U.S. in the spring 2009 Pew Global Attitudes survey, the lowest rating among the 25 nations included in the poll.

Postwar Optimism Soars in Sri Lanka
Although they are suffering financially as are residents in many other countries in the region, the number of Sri Lankans who believe their economy is getting better increased dramatically in the past year -- jumping from 36% in 2008 to 64% in 2009.

Majority of People across the World Want Action on Climate Change, Even if it Entails Costs

A new poll of 15 nations, most of them in the developing world, finds that majorities of the people canvassed want their governments to take steps to fight climate change, even if that entails costs.

Climate Concerns Continue to Increase: Global Poll
Public concern about climate change is at its highest level since GlobeScan began international tracking in 1998, according to a new GlobeScan/BBC World Service poll conducted in 23 countries. Nearly two thirds of those polled now say climate change is a “very serious” problem. However, concern has fallen in China and the USA.

A 25 countries PEW survey reveals that majorities in 23 of 25 countries agree that protecting the environment should be given priority, even at the cost of slower economic growth and job losses. And many are willing to make sacrifices, such as having to pay higher prices, to address global warming.

Israelis Distrust Capabilities of International Forces
Many people in Israel think that a recent armed conflict with the Lebanon-based Hezbollah militias suggests that the country cannot trust international forces to maintain peace, according to a poll by Maagar Mochot. 48 per cent of respondents share this opinion and say that it would be a mistake for Israel to accept a Palestinian-Israeli peace plan that relies on international forces for security arrangements.

AKP Remains Strongest Party in Turkey
The Justice and Development Party (AKP) is still the most popular organization in Turkey, according to a poll by Genar. 37.5 per cent of respondents would vote for the governing party in the next legislative election.

Malaysians See Country as Seriously Corrupt
The vast majority of people in Malaysia say corruption is rampant in the country, according to a poll by the Merdeka Center for Opinion Research. 40 per cent of respondents say corruption is a very serious issue in Malaysia, while 41 per cent say it is a somewhat serious problem.

Most people in Thailand think Abhisit Vejjajiva has handled recent tensions with neighbouring Cambodia well, according to a poll by ABAC. 51.9 per cent of respondents say the prime ministers calm attitude has been appropriate, while 39.4 per cent say his response to Cambodia should be harsher.

Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas would defeat Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in the next election, according to a poll by Arab World for Research & Development (AWRAD). 38.7 per cent of respondents would support Abbas of the Fatah movement in the next ballot.

Afghans Assess Roles for NATO, U.N., Regional Actors
Afghans surveyed in June by Gallup, were most likely to think NATO, the United Nations, India, and Iran are playing roles in reconstruction. In regard to Pakistan, however, Afghans were just as likely to say that country's role is supporting the Taliban as they were to say it is helping with reconstruction.

President Hamid Karzai last week vowed to remove the "dark stain" of corruption from Afghanistan in his second five-year term. Gallup surveys in Afghanistan underscore the enormity of the challenge Karzai faces in keeping this promise. Roughly 8 in 10 Afghans (81%) interviewed in June before the fraud-marred August election said corruption is widespread throughout the country's government.
