India had as on September 2008 45.3 million active internet users. This is according to the I-Cube Study, conducted annually by IMRB International and Internet and Mobile Association of India [IAMAI]. Majority of urban Indians cite lack of awareness as a main hurdle in the usage of internet.

Underscoring issues with access to quality local healthcare, a median of about one in five households across 11 Asian countries say at least one member had to travel to another community for medical care in the past year. Afghans Less Confident in Elections This Time (Click for Details)

Afghans' increasing lack of confidence in the honesty of their elections, along with major security concerns, has been a pertinent issue in the country's second parliamentary elections. Gallup surveys show the percentage of Afghans who do not trust their electoral process spiraled from 49% just after last year's fraud-marred presidential election to 67% earlier this year.

Turks Downbeat about Their Institutions (Click for Details)

As Turks debate an upcoming referendum that would modify the country's constitution, a recent Pew Global Attitudes survey reveals how much confidence in Turkish institutions has slipped over the last few years. Throughout the country's history, the military has played a major role in Turkish politics, and it continues to be a popular institution: 72% say it is having a very or somewhat good influence on the way things are going in Turkey. However, this is down from 85% in 2007.

A recent survey of Palestinians carried out by AWARD (Arab World for Research & Development) shows that a 2/3 majority of Palestinians support conditional direct negotiations with Israel while less than one in ten support unconditional direct negotiations.

(Multi-country survey) Religiosity Highest in World's Poorest Nations (Click for Details)

Gallup surveys in 114 countries in 2009 show that religion continues to play an important role in many people's lives worldwide. The global median proportion of adults who say religion is an important part of their daily lives is 84%, unchanged from what Gallup has found in other years. The data shows a strong relationship between socio-economic conditions and religiosity in a country.

Iraqis More Approving of Own Leadership Than of U.S. (Click for Details)

Iraqis approved more of their own country's leadership than U.S. leadership in early 2010 -- the reverse of their sentiment in 2008. Iraqis' relative confidence in their own leadership at the time of Gallup's most recent survey, which was conducted shortly before the elections in March, could be taken as a positive sign as the U.S. diminishes its military presence in the country and Iraqis take more control.

Multi Country Poll: Migration Could Triple Populations in Some Wealthy Nations (Click for Details)

Gallup's Potential Net Migration Index finds Singapore, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, and Kuwait atop the list of countries that could see the highest net adult population growth from international migration. If all adults worldwide who desire to migrate permanently to other countries actually moved where they wanted today, each country would see their adult populations double or even triple.

Afghans, Pakistanis Critical of Efforts to Fight Terrorism (Click for Details)

After last month's leak of U.S. intelligence documents related to the war in Afghanistan suggested Pakistani collusion with the Taliban, Afghan President Hamid Karzai criticized the West, as well as Pakistan, for not doing enough to counter cross-border terrorist threats from within Pakistan. Gallup surveys conducted before the leak found 78% of Afghans would agree Pakistan's efforts fall short.

More Than One Third Of All Pakistanis (37%) Claim To Be Affected By The Recent Flood (Click for Details)

According to a Gilani Research Foundation survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, almost one third of all Pakistanis (37%) claim to be the victims of the flood water, 29% state the affect on them has been very mild while only 31% say they were not affected at all. 3% have given no response. The figures reflect their perceptions and may or may not correspond with the actual flood situation.

Roughly one in four adults in 12 former Soviet nations say they would like to move to another country for temporary work (24%) or to study or take part in a work-study program (25%) if they had the opportunity to do so.
