Karzai Faces Steep Climb to Curb Perceptions of Corruption
President Hamid Karzai last week vowed to remove the "dark stain" of corruption from Afghanistan in his second five-year term. Gallup surveys in Afghanistan underscore the enormity of the challenge Karzai faces in keeping this promise. Roughly 8 in 10 Afghans (81%) interviewed in June before the fraud-marred August election said corruption is widespread throughout the country's government.

Many Taiwanese Want Full Independence
Almost half of people in Taiwan think the territory should ultimately become an independent country, according to a poll by Global Views. 47.2 per cent of respondents agree with this statement, while 34.1 per cent disagree.

Sharp Popularity Drop for Japanese Cabinet
Japan’s new government remains highly popular but has already lost some ground, according to a poll by Yomiuri. 63 per cent of respondents approve of the appointed cabinet of prime minister Yukio Hatoyama, down eight points since October.

More people in South Korea are expressing support for the leadership of Lee Myung-bak, according to a poll by the Korea Society Opinion Institute. 33 per cent of respondents approve of their president’s performance, up nine points since October.

Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a new BBC World Service global poll finds that dissatisfaction with free market capitalism is widespread, with an average of only 11% across 27 countries saying that it works well and that greater regulation is not a good idea.
