Over Half of Japanese Disappointed with Government

People in Japan continue to grow dissatisfied with the government led by prime minister Yukio Hatoyama, according to a poll by Nikkei. 57 per cent of respondents disapprove of Hatoyama’s cabinet, up eight points since February.

Kadima Takes First Place Among Israeli Voters
Israel’s opposition Kadima party is ahead of the governing Likud, according to a poll by the Dahaf Institute published in Yediot Ahronot. A prospective tally of seats shows that Kadima would secure 32 seats in the Knesset, followed by Likud with 29.

Turks Endorse Idea of Civilian Constitution
Most people in Turkey think the country needs to enact a civilian constitution, according to a poll by Pollmark. 58 per cent of respondents share this opinion, while 20 per cent oppose the notion.

Many people in Israel are in favour of their prime minister’s decision to carry on with construction in Jerusalem, according to a poll by Maagar Mochot. 62 per cent of respondents support the actions of Benjamin Netanyahu.

Fatah remains more popular than its opponent Hamas amongst Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, according to a poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research. 42 per cent of respondents would vote for Fatah in the next legislative election, down one point since December.

Abbas Leads Haniyeh in Palestinian Ballot
Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah could defeat Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas in a new election, according to a poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research. 50 per cent of respondents would vote for Abbas, while 40 per cent would support Haniyeh.

Bangkok Residents Condemn Red-Shirts Rallies
Most people in Bangkok and seven surrounding provinces of the Thai capital see with disdain the popular rallies organized by the so-called red shirts, according to a poll by Suan Dusit University. 57.1 per cent of respondents say the rallies are not a democratic expression but a political game to topple the government.

The Behavioral Economics of GDP Growth: Gallup Global Wellbeing
Gallup reveals its data of 155 countries on wellbeing. Gallup categorized the respondents into ‘thriving’, ‘struggling’ and ‘suffering’. It shows that majority of population from across the world are either struggling or suffering.
Gallup asks ordinary individuals for their thoughts and opinions on several topics, including economics, religion, migration, and wellbeing. Gallup’s data provide sound evidence on many issues that more than 98% of the world’s adult population faces.

Pakistanis, Afghans Unconvinced by Gov't Anti-Terror Efforts
Despite Pakistan's major military offensives against the Taliban last year, Gallup surveys show Pakistanis' evaluations of their government's efforts to fight terrorism didn't improve -- or change much at all -- in 2009. Nearly half (49%) of Pakistanis surveyed in November and December said their government isn't doing enough, similar to the 47% who said so in May and June.

Indonesia's Place Along the Spectrum of Global Religious Restriction
Restrictions on religious practice are far from uncommon in today's world. The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life has found that 64 nations, about one in three among the countries and territories covered by its Global Restrictions on Religion study, have high restrictions on religion either because of government restrictions, social hostilities or both. Indonesia is among the top such countries where such restrictions are very high.

Of course, Indonesia is not alone in this pattern -- Obama's election led to better ratings for the United States in many nations around the globe. However, Indonesia -- the world's largest predominantly Muslim country -- is an outlier in the Muslim world, where opinions of the U.S. remain mostly negative.

A new Financial Times/Harris Poll of adults under 65 finds support for increased security measures after the attempted bombing of a plane on Christmas Day. Majorities of those surveyed in the United States (64%), Great Britain (62%), Italy (58%), France (58%), and Germany (53%) as well as 46% of Spaniards and 44% of Chinese all agree that body scanners that X-ray the fill body should be introduced at airports.

The poll of more than 27,000 adults conducted by GlobeScan found that 87 per cent of those who used the internet felt that internet access should be “the fundamental right of all people.” More than seven in ten (71%) non-internet users also felt that they should have the right to access the web.

Fewer Afghans See Corruption Increasing in Their Country
Gallup surveys document some positive momentum in Afghans' views about the level of corruption in their country following the controversial presidential election in August last year. The number of Afghans saying corruption levels were higher than they were five years ago continued to decline, dropping below 50% for the first time in Gallup's September-October survey.

Entrepreneurial Goals Common Among Young in Arab States
In Arab League countries, there appears to be no shortage of entrepreneurial aspirations among young people. Across 20 countries and the Somaliland region of Somalia, a median 27% of young Arabs who were not already business owners said they intended to start a business in the next 12 months. Intent to create a business ranged from a high of 45% in Sudan to a low of 9% in Jordan.

In Arab Countries, Emigration Appeals More to the Employed
Young Arabs who have a job are more likely than those who do not to express the desire to emigrate permanently. Across Arab League member countries surveyed, 31% of respondents who already work full time compared with 17% who are not in the workforce say they would like to leave their country permanently, if they had the opportunity.
